Understanding emergency respiratory care.
Severe breathing difficulty means the lungs are unable to supply enough oxygen to the body. This rapidly affects the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Without urgent medical intervention, oxygen deprivation can lead to organ failure, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrest, and even death within a very short time.
Severe breathing difficulty can result from asthma attacks, pneumonia, severe lung infections, heart failure, allergic reactions, airway blockage, blood clots in the lungs, trauma to the chest, or poisoning. These conditions can worsen rapidly and require immediate ICU-level care.
Warning signs include extreme breathlessness, rapid or labored breathing, bluish lips or fingernails, inability to speak properly, chest tightness, confusion, panic, and visible use of neck or chest muscles while breathing. These signs indicate urgent oxygen deprivation.
Treatment includes high-flow oxygen, medications to open airways, antibiotics if infection is suspected, continuous monitoring, and ventilator support when the patient cannot breathe adequately on their own.
Delayed treatment can result in respiratory failure, irreversible brain damage, heart rhythm disturbances, cardiac arrest, and increased risk of death.
